My blog about whether or not meat was a good source of food got great response. I decided to explore the vegetarian and vegan side of the argument. Since I am all about southern cooking I am going to explore the vegan and vegetarian style of southern cooking.
I took the visual route first and it leads me to some interesting blog sites and articles. Souley Vegan is a vegan southern food restaurant in Oakland California. They just reopened and were lucky enough to get a food critic that happened to have been in town to stop in, here is his review http://www.toliveandeatinla.com/2009/souley-vegan-soul-food-oakland/. The food does look amazing and since Grandma Maud’s Premium Bean Meals can be used with or without meat, I know the food is able to taste amazing without the meat. Take Grandma Maud’s Premium Southern Seasoning, if you seasoned food with it, you would experience the savory taste with no meat products.
After browsing the web I ran into yet another site which offered great pictures and information about an aspect of vegan southern food, southern fried chicken. Tyra Banks made a fake fried chicken that looks like real chicken. Giving her studio audience all the same ingredients, together they made the fake fried chicken out of bread http://easygreens.wordpress.com/2010/02/25/tyra-banks-explains-how-to-make-vegetarian-fried-chicken/.
Here is a vegan friend chicken using chicken substitute and this chicken was made by a person who used to eat meat http://www.cestlavegan.com/2010/02/fried-chicken-fingers/. Here is another link to a deep fried vegan chicken.
Personally I think the meat alternatives can offer a healthier version of a southern favorite, but the only thing the recipes above are missing is Grandma Maud’s Southern Seasoning.
